How to Place Your Baby for Adoption

Want to learn more about the adoption process? Take a step-by-step look at what to expect when you make an adoption plan with Adoption Advocates.

When you meet with a counselor, you’ll discuss your unique situation and explore your options. If you’re ready, your counselor can help you establish medical care as well as determine how much financial assistance the adoption agency can provide.

Start making important decisions for your adoption plan – like choosing an adoptive family and developing a post-placement contact plan. Your counselor will also help you create a hospital and birth plan. At the hospital, you’ll be in control of how much time you spend with the baby, whether or not the adoptive parents are there, and what name goes on your baby’s birth certificate.

With open adoption, you’ll be able to choose the adoptive family. Adoption Advocates works with families of all backgrounds, religions, races and sexual orientations, so you can choose the family that feels right to you.

After the baby is born, your counselor will meet with you to help you process your feelings so you can determine if adoption is still the right choice for you.

This can be done no sooner than 48 hours after the baby is born, but you can take more time if you need to. In most cases, placement with your chosen adoptive family happens immediately after you’ve signed the relinquishment papers.

Your counselor will continue to provide post-placement counseling grief counseling sessions at no charge for as long as you need.

Making the decision to place my first and only child with an adoptive family was hands down the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do but looking back- I am 100% confident it was the best choice I could have made.
