How to Place Your Baby for Adoption If You’ve Already Delivered

If you’re contacting an adoption agency for the first time after you’ve delivered, the process will move faster, but you’ll still be able to make the same choices – including choosing the family and deciding how much contact you’d like after placement.

Call (512) 477-1122 or text (512) 656-5560 to get started. If you’re still in the hospital, you can also ask the hospital’s social worker to reach out to Adoption Advocates, if that’s easier.

An experienced adoption caseworker will meet with you as soon as possible – usually within a few hours. After learning more about adoption, you’ll decide if you want to move forward with placing your baby for adoption.

Your counselor will provide profile books of adoptive families for you to look through. If you do not want to choose the family, we can select for you based on any preferences you indicate.

If you’re sure about adoption and it’s been at least 48 hours since the baby was born, you’ll sign the relinquishment papers. Placement with your chosen adoptive family will happen immediately.

The adoption process moves quickly after a baby is born, and 48 hours may not be enough time for you to make a decision. If you need more time, we can arrange for short-term interim care after your baby is released from the hospital. You’ll be able to continue exploring your options and spend time with your baby before you make a final decision.

After placement, your caseworker will continue to meet with you to provide counseling and support services.

At first open adoption terrified me, then I realized that this whole situation had little to do with what I wanted for me, and everything to do with what I wanted for her.
